Sony appears to censor LGBTQ content in Marvel's Wolverine for some regions

Insomniac Games' and Sony Interactive Entertainment's new comic book-inspired blockbuster game Marvel's Wolverine appears to have had LGBTQ content censored from the game for users in certain regions of the world. Reports of this removal come from a number of users on X and Reddit (and were spotted by Kotaku), who all noticed that content referring to the marriage of two non-playable female characters named Mystique and Tyger has been scrubbed from the game.

One video from Reddit user Squeakyyy appears to capture all of the censored content referring to Mystique and Tyger's marriage. These include an in-game photo of their wedding day and voice lines where each refers to the other as their wife, or that they love each other. The photo in question is blurred out when the player picks it up from Mystique's locker, and the audio simply cuts out when Mystique or Tyger says the censored words. The subtitles for these lines are replaced by asterisk marks.

The user's post describes this censorship as taking place in "Middle East versions" of the game, but it's unclear as of this writing if this ban is in effect in every Middle Eastern country or if it's been implemented in other regions.

This wouldn't be the first time that Insomniac's Marvel-themed games have been modified to remove LGBTQ-themed content when being distributed in the Middle East. Sony previously altered some content from 2023's Marvel's Spider-Man 2, including the display of pride flags and a side quest featuring a gay couple, when releasing the game in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Depictions of homosexuality are censored in both countries, with homosexuality and other types of LGBTQ identity also being outlawed.

Such censorship is sadly not limited to one region. Companies like EA and Roblox Corporation have previously wrangled with the difficulty of releasing content in countries like Russia, which also outlaws homosexuality.
