Six years after the last major content update, rumors fly of the elusive Battlefront installment’s return.
As reported by Giant Bomb‘s Jeff Grub (via Insider Gaming), Disney is said to be in search of a studio to finally get the highly-demanded Star Wars Battlefront 3 off the ground. Two studios may be in talks with Disney behind the scenes, and they are: DICE and Bungie.
DICE already has history with the Star Wars Battlefront franchise, as they were the same developers under EA that released the Battlefront reboots in 2015 and almost 10 years ago in 2017. In fact, DICE already pitched Star Wars Battlefront 3 back in 2021 but was reject by EA due to Disney’s 20% licensing fee (as reported by Star Wars News Net).
Bungie on the other hand, is known not only as the original creators of XBOX’s Halo franchise, but also the creators of Destiny and Marathon, even under Sony PlayStation’s ownership. While Bungie has never worked on a Star Wars title, they were behind the Star Wars-esque Destiny 2 expansion Renegades last year. Bungie as a potential dev for Battlefront 3 may be called into question though, as the studio has been hit with layoffs regarding Destiny 2 and Marathon’s player count struggles (via PlayStation Universe).
Chatter over Battlefront 3 has also gone a bit further back, as community-led efforts to get Disney to make Battlefront 3 resulted in the Star Wars Battlefront 2 Resurgence Day last year and another earlier this year in May (hosted by Kyber.gg). Don’t forget about the original Battlefront 3 that was revealed and narrowly cancelled around 2008.
Fans will need to continue awaiting confirmation or denial of this rumor, as there have been no official announcements from Disney yet over Battlefront 3’s potential early development.
